Authors Purpose
Ernest Cline was born in the 1970's and loved "Back To The Future" films. Initially Ernest Cline was trying to become a screenwriter before seeing his writing was warped in the films he created. Ernest Cline was a tech support worker and began to lose interest in the position. He resigned his position to search for something for which he had a passion. He realized he continued to have a passion Star Wars and Back to the Future films. Ernest Cline's friend Harry convinced him to keep on writing his book over a span of 7-8 years after and he saw Earnest's potential. Over the span of 7-8 years he wrote Ready Player One and only his friends and family knew about his hobby. Being born in the 1970’s, Ernest played video games and watched his favorite films inspired him to write the sci-fi aspect of the book.
Ernest Cline's family were very religious and banned video games, so he read science fiction books to fill in the gap. He would sneak and play video games at the arcade. Ernest Cline's brother had a career in the military which helped Ernest to imagine his brother in battle. Ernest would imagine situations in real life circumstances which helped him draw the realism and parallel of real life into his book. He bought in the idea of virtual reality in a place that fiction could be possible and reality would be present in his book with real life situations, such as online currency and ordering food to their home where people would try to escape from real life. Multiple realities were imagined where everything and anything is perfect and where different settings and different possibilities exist. The Willy Wonka film, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" inspired the idea of a golden ticket. In Ready Player One the characters search for the golden ticket. If the golden ticket was found then the owner would have a treasure chest of virtual money. Literally finding the money would make the winner the wealthiest person alive. Ernest Cline also played War of Warcraft and took some ideas from there as well. He used the idea of combat. He used the idea of an open world meaning playing in multiple realities. There were the idea of a PVP or battle zone area as well as a safe zone. This background to War of Warcraft brought an aspect of free to roam area to the universe created in virtual reality. All of this culminated into the book Ready Player One. Ernest Cline likely sees himself as the main character of Ready Player One because he’s always imagining the future and how various realities can be so different.
